Leveling Blues

As I mentioned previously, I’m experiencing some annoyances as I level this Horde Paladin. They aren’t really experience based (or rather Experience Gain based) because when I start completing quests, I level really fast. Blizzard could raise the XP curve, as they are discussing, but that would only allow me to bypass quests or get straight to grinding. And I don’t know about you, but I play this game in order to… you know… play this game. The quests and the backstory, the concerns facing these various peoples as they make their way though the end of their world is the reason I’m there.

And yes, it is the end of the world. The one and only hope for Azeroth is the complete annihilation of the Scourge and its Plague along with the Forsaken and their efforts to make a New Plague. Without getting rid of the corruption of undeath, it won’t matter if we manage to kill Sargeras and the whole Burning Legion. The undead are functionally immortal and spreading. They are corrupting the land they live in and are eventually going to win by default unless completely destroyed. This would remove an entire playable race (and a semi-popular one) though, so I don’t think that WoW is going that way anytime soon.

What’s really boiling my potatoes with this new kid though is gold. I don’t know how Sean and Jill do it, but I’ve got copper in the bank and I’m two and a half levels behind on abilities. Jill said she sold fish, and honestly I’ve never really tried that. My auction house alt has so far managed to make money selling strange dust only, even when she prices things FAR below cost. The fact that I’m in twink territory and everything is hideously overpriced isn’t helping, but still you’d think I could work something up. I think that Engineering isn’t helping either, the few things I can sell to non-engineers (guns and scopes) are either underpowered (the guns) or more useful as raw materials (the scopes).

So, any tips?

Some thoughts on Wrath.

Yeah, I’m still trying to be good, but this is more on the new World of Warcraft Expansion: Wrath of the Lich King. I’m a little excited, and there are several reasons why. First, I like what I’ve seen of the environments. I don’t know if this is a secret, but my favorite zones are the frost covered ones. I’m huge for Winterspring (lacking in quests though it is), and my favorite starting zone (on looks alone) has to be Kharanos. Now the autumnal feel of Eversong comes a very close second, and the new-in-Burning-Crusade 10-20 zones beat anything else in their range on equipment alone. But I digress: I love the snow-covered landscapes. I like watching my character’s breath mist in the air, I like the snow dusting as I run, all that. And not just because it about 10,000o C outside.

Secondly, the design looks pretty tight. They say they are moving away from the High Fantasy of Burning Crusade and towards a more Gothic Fantasy look. From what they’ve shown of the zones, it looks like Vikings-meet-Duskwood, so I’m happy. My one complaint with trying to level a Horde Paladin is that he will never be able to join the Night Watch. I’d love the Watch to become a faction at some point. But I digress again.

Third it looks like I’ll be given a chance to see some old content that I never saw in “retail WoW.” The rumor is that Naxxramas, the citadel of Kel’thuzad is moving to Northrend as a 25 man level 80 dungeon. Serenity used to run Zul’gurub back in the day so there is a good chance that I’ll get to see that if I apply myself and get to 70.

Fourth, the Death Knight looks like a lot of fun. I’m not sure how it is going to square with lore and culture, but still fun. I mean how could a Death Knight walk into Stormwind Cathedral? Is Brother Sarno going to shout “Welcome, Death Knight?” Ah well.

It isn’t all rosy though. I mean we’re getting another new profession whose whole purpose is to buff spells and abilities. This is cool, but isn’t that stepping on enchantment a little? And all of the content that is being added is for top end stuff. No real change to Azeroth or to Outlands. It seems a shame that Dustwallow Marsh still deadends, and the Sunken Temple doesn’t lead to any payoff with the Chained Essence.

Well, I’ll keep my hopes up and hopefully they will be justified.

Blah Blah

I’m making a screenshot of this webpage for my DeviantArt page. I’m tired of doing all this stuff and not putting anything on there except screenshots of my crappy desktop.

Which reminds me, I need to put up a new screenshot of my desktop.

Two week update.

No, I didn’t jump off a bridge or anything. Just busy busy busy around here. And the Kitten is keeping me up with his caterwauling at night. Usually, thanks to living on the Wrong Side of the Tracks downtown I can sleep through anything (or almost anything). However, it seems that kitten yowling is the kryptonite to my Deep Slumber special ability. It is also annoying that he isn’t apparently the property of anybody in the neighborhood. I honestly expected tearful “thank you”s and such within the day of his pickup.

But no, it looks like we have four cats now. Ah well.

Another Blizzcon came and went while I wasn’t posting, and sadly I wasn’t there either. I’ll go one of these years, but I’d like to go in costume. There’s an entire post right there, I just haven’t written it yet. That and the impressions of the coming changes.

I’ve also started another Belf Paladin and this is the last one. Seriously. He is Sullivan of Zangarmarsh and if you want to play horde (and I know you) PST me. He is only level 16 at the moment, but will ding 17 before I’m done with the spider-killing part of the quest I am currently on. I’ve only got the two animal killing quests left, then the trolls under Suncrown Peak and the trolls around Zul’Aman. Then its all Deatholme and Dar’khan. After that, I don’t know. Definitely going to the Barrens, but I’m on the fence about exposing myself to the crummy quest design from 20-58 for anything other than l00t I specifically want. There’s a large vocal following for Paladin AOE Grinding amongst the WoW forum people. Basically the technique is getting most/all of the damage reflection talents from the Protection Tree (Level 35 being the earliest you can get Holy Shield, therefore the earliest you can start) and as much damage reflection as you can from gear/consumables. Then with that in hand you pull as many melee mobs as you can. The more the merrier. The forum people recommend merlocs because they go and run to grab more. You then heal yourself while killing 7-8 mobs at a time. Rinse repeat, easy levels.

Now Outland is the brass ring at the end of the road. There the quests streamline and the rewards improve dramatically. I’d certainly go back to questing at that point. I don’t know the story is the largest part of the game I enjoy. I think that reducing it to a grind would kill the enjoyment. Well, we shall see how the Barrens treats me.

Anyhow, Martin, tell me your and your friend’s character’s names so I can get connected to the extended network and get some Horde side friends that I don’t have to meet over the internet. That’s mostly skeezy, Chatty company excepted.
