Quick update.

Canti
You are most like Canti!

Gotta love that. And also i’ve got to get this thing to fill 100% of the space that is alotted to it. Damn, i really should get on that.

The last time…

Yeah, seriously. This is the last time i’ll be talking about the Ring. Guess what happened last night/this morning? I go to bed fully content that i’ve dodged death what with Jason’s impeccable help, and i have a pretty good night sleep. Now i left my computer running (to download a version of FLCL Episode 4 that actually has sound), and that didn’t bother me. To be honest, the wind tunnel effect that my loud-ass cooler generates puts me to sleep pretty easily. Now sometime around 6 or so, thirty minutes before i awake, i think one of my cats jumped up on my desk. Apparently i’m sharing the cursed videotape, because when he [the cat] walked on the keyboard it appears he queued it up. So i wake up, slightly disoriented and wondering “What’s that?” then it hits me and i literally spring up and twist to see, filling my damn computer screen, That Damned Well. Lets pretend that i actually shouted something intelligible and then started whipping throwing knives.

The .mov ended and i realized exactly what was going on, and it still took me a few minutes to calm back down. No cats or monitors were harmed during my concentraited attack, you’ll be proud to know, though it may have shaved a few decades off my heart.

Yeah, that was interesting. Check this out: Samara(Sadako) toys. In the lower right hand corner. I’d really kill for one of the “Her crawling out of the well” one. This was several years ago, so they are all taken.

On less horror related news, i’ve now seen all of FLCL, and lord but i love it. Completely and wholly. I have only downloaded the series as preparation for buying the Big Set that will come out after all the DVDs. I want the box and the undoubtably special stuff. What i’d really like is a Canti t-shirt that isn’t fan-made.

Just to be helpful…

Yeah, could somebody be a real pal and watch this. Yeah, just download and watch that bad boy then give me a comment. Just try to before tomorrow morning, it’d be really helpful.

What type of manga are you?

brought to you by Quizilla

Yeah, who saw that coming? Well, back to work. I’ll edit this, or make another post later.

Thanks a boatload, Tux.

Yes, that is sarcasm. Apparently a Redhat install costs $150 in the store, something i had not anticipated. On top of that, their iso images for download seem to take about 48 hours a pop. And this isn’t on a wussy-ass dialup account either, this is on broadband. With six cd’s to download, i’m just not in the mood to wait that long. So if anybody has a decent reccomendation and/or CD’s to install said OS, i’d be more than happy to field try it out.

Until i can get an OS, the project is effectively stalled where it is. However it is beginning to look like i may need to remove and re-seat the motherboard, and this is actually a good thing. It will give me the excuse i need to dissassemble and photograph the steps i’ve taken to build this thing up. I’ve got a few interesting directions i’d like to take this thing, and they either entail selling what i have now and rebuilding the whole thing, or putting a number of band-aids on the many problems the box has (processors and 4 gb hard drive limit are the two big ‘uns). I may just overcome the size limit and get some OverDrive processors then work on the Linux thing from there. You never know what eBay may have for me.

Yee-haw

Well, i’m still not too good at the falling thing. I keep trying to catch myself, and i am told that this is a mistake when you are doing a Tai Chi Assisted Fall (TCAF). I figure that if i sprain my wrist or something i’ll get out of pushups for the next few Kung Fu practices. I’ll just be set on doing something far worse by Sifu.

So i’m at T+1 day from seeing The Ring, and have not fallen prey to TV-Zombies. I feel the need to Eat brains, though, so i may have simply been inculcated. Uh oh, inculcation. Of course they have a convenient excuse in that i downloaded and watched an AVI of the cursed videotape in its entirety. This will then take effect on next Tuesday, so you’d better believe i’m taking some salt to work. I figure that salt works on normal ghosts, so mayhaps it could work on TV-Ghosts. This is flimsy at best. Oh well.

Hmmm, off to get my butt whupped at the Kung Fu celebration. There’s still an hour to make it, so if everybody gets their asses in gear, they should be here in time.

Stuntman Brooks

I am now officially “in” the Kung Fu Celebration this weekend, so if anybody wants to come down to columbia and see me get my ass soundly kicked is certainly welcome to. Seriously, i’m going to be doing a two-man combat demo with a Tai Chi lawyer, and i will be playing the part of Street Thug. Basically, i’m going to grab the guy then he is going to throw me bodily to the ground. Then i’m going to try to hit him, and he will answer with sharp jabs to my sternum. I plan to hit the hardwood no fewer than nine times. I should probably practice falling without hurting myself RIGHT NOW.

bought the third Battle Angel graphic novel yesterday, and i have to say i feel really ripped off. I mean that was less than half of a story arc, and i payed $15 for the damn thing. Combine it with the next volume and sell it to me for $20-$25 and then we’re talking. And is it just me, or is Panzer Kunst getting more rediculous every time Alita talks about it? I mean its a lost, ancient martial art, OK. Then its an ancient, lost, cyborg martial art. Now its an ancient, lost, martian cyborg martial art. I mean what is it going to be by the last novel, twenty descriptive words long? This won’t stop me from buying the novels, because damn but i enjoy the series.

Just because i love something doesn’t blind me to its faults, i have to say. “The Ring” had horrible dialogue, for instance. But then you don’t watch that movie for the wonderful scripting.

Rin-goo…

OK, so i told a fib last time. You may feel free to scowl at me at will. I was actually incredibly freaked out by The Ring. It takes a big man to admit it, but i was more than frightened, i was terrified. I came to this conclusion late yesterday. You see, i went to the flick with my girl, and i’m pretty sure she doesn’t do horror movies, atleast not like i do. I watched the whole thing and wasn’t really scared so to speak, but the main contributing factor to this would have to be my woman sighing loudly every five seconds until i had to ask her to stop (she was disturbing people around us). However i find myself, days later, saying “Shit, that thing with the mirror was crazy.” or “God but that room in the hayloft would scare the bejeezus out of me.” or “There’s no way in hell i’d be walking into the basement of that insane asylum.” And then it hit me, lord but that was a good scary movie.

For me, there is really one main prerequisite for a good scary movie:
The “Baddie” cannot be human — There is nothing scary about bad people. If the bad guy is signifigantly killed by a speeding truck, or is vulnerable to normal stabbing, it is lame. The Ring not only hit me with a non-human creeping horror, but made it so strange that i cannot really think of something that would stop that cursed videotape and its week-related effects.

One thing i have to say about the remake: it certainly showed its Japanese roots. The little title boards that popped up between days are incredibly typical of asian movies. Its like the whole country saw The Shining and said “Holy crap, this is the movie for us.” Though apparently the Japanese version featured a hermaphroditic little girl, and everybody had psychic powers. Everybody. And the well was not overbuilt by really creepy resort cabins, but rather by a video store that carried the cursed video casette. I can see it now, two asian gentlemen are standing in front of “New Releases,” the following dialogue ensues:

Otaku 1: So, do we rent Gojira, La Blue Girl, or the cursed videotape that kills you in seven days?
Otaku 2: Cursed videotape? Excellent!

All kidding aside, i don’t think there’s a moment in contemporary cinema that has hit me with as much concentraited dread as when the mother has snatched the cursed tape from the shelf at the resort, is sliding it into the machine, and the setting sun through the nearby maple’s leaves washes the whole scene slowly in red, fading upwards until the entire room is cloaked in red light. Or when the mother and her estranged husband rip the floor out of the selfsame cabin and are shoving this huge stone off of the top of the well. Or when the TV turns itself on and starts showing a grainy picture of the well… then one little white hand reaches up and starts to haul out…

You know, i finished “Souls in the Great Machine” Friday night, and i can honestly say that i’m no longer convinced that falling asleep with my reading light on was purely an accident…

Ugh, what a week it has been

So i think i’ve defragged my slack. Honestly. What i mean is that i’m very dedicated for about a week, then i take a week off, instead of posting once every few days… Oh well, things could be worse, right? Actually since last post things have been busy as hell. I’ve managed to see “The Transporter,” “The Ring,” and the first volume of FLCL, as well as gain a valuable milestone in my quest to complete the server.

As to the File Server from Beyond the Grave, i’ve managed to get a multi-gig drive booting, fdisk-ed and formatted. Its really rather amazing… To start this thing up and actually get a command prompt, then be able to play Star Control. I am simply blown away. To celebrate, i bought a PC Geiger, and i have to say that this thing kicks all ass. It has already helped me run down a problem with the server (the reason it wasn’t booting with the 8 gig drive), and plus it looks cool as all hell. I’m thinking about getting an Adaptec Duo Connect card to access the front firewire and USB 2.0 adapters. That would as well be killer. The manual was comprehensible too, which is something than can’t usually be said about a very japanese product.

Speaking of the Japanese, i saw FLCL last saturday, and i was plain blown away. I payed $25 for two episodes (something i promiced i’d never do again) and i think i got more than my money’s worth. I’d gladly buy the next two volumes when they come out too, and still feel like i didn’t get cheated. I can’t adiquately describe how or why this series kicks all the ass that it does, but suffice to say it has all the insanity of NieA or Excel Saga, combined with giant robots, a badass soundtrack, and really interesting dynamic animation. I mean what’s not to love?

Speaking of watching things, i caught “The Transporter” the Friday before last. I enjoyed the crap out of it. It’s a literally non-stop action film that features some of the best kung fu to come out of Europe in the last few years. Yes, i’m looking right at you, “Crimson Rivers.” The scene with the motor oil was worth the price of admission alone.

Still talking about movies, i caught “The Ring” last night. Errr, i don’t know what to say. It was trying really hard to freak me out, and would have succeeded too, if it wasn’t for the director. The cinematography was what it should have been, and the idea was somewhat creepy, but i just have to say that it wasn’t everything i had been hoping for. I’d gone into the theater wanting so very badly to be scared shitless, that i scared myself shitless with no help from the movie. It was basically a destraction for my eyes while my adrenal glands pumped out a metric fuckton of dread. All in all it could have been better.

Wait, that Harry Potter Test from last time told me to take the test again… this time i’m still the Big V, but with a few differences…

I’m a Ravenclaw this time, and i seem to own a snake… *shrug*.

Ugh, ad for the repugnant E.T. Special Edition DVD. I could have gone my entire life never seeing that pile of dung. The original was good, the remake sucked. Hard.

Oh well, back to Resident Evil 2 (tonight, i beat it!) and playing with this Kanti action figure (Kanti rocks). Hopefully i’ll be able to be dedicated to this thing next week.

One Small Step

So i’m Movable Type version 2.5 now. They keep making this upgrade easier and easier really. There was a little wierdness with the rebuilding (after i posted this, actually.) but a quick complete deletion of the “executables” and re-uploading fixed the whole thing. I did make a backup, however, so that might be it. When i bother to prepare myself i’ll never need my preparedness. Well, atlest pessimism hasn’t let me down yet.

Oh well, off to the schools.

Another Breakthrough!

There we go, i’ve got the Geiger in the 5.25″ bay, and a hard drive sitting behind it all nice and sweet, and the drive in question is behaving quite nicely. It has fdisked and formatted just like a hard drive should, and i’m able to command prompt into the drive and take a look at what’s going on. I’m waiting now to find an operating system that’ll let me develop a knowledge of non-MS OS’s, but won’t be daunting as all hell. Yes, i’d like to start with a command line and move my way up to a GUI, thank you very much. I still use DOS, and i like knowing what my pretty pictures are actually doing underneath the covers so to speak.

In the meanwhile i’ve been playing star control 2. Lord i love that game.
